DOUGLAS FIR PERGOLA

Our client wanted an upgrade to her garden space and for us to provide a showpiece pergola that can be used to host guests and relax in the summer months. After reviewing options for timber and finalising the design we decided to go with Douglas fir. This wood works great in outdoor applications to its its high density, natural strength, and natural oils. The wood contains chemical compounds (extractives) that protect it from decay and moisture, meaning it is naturally durable and dimensionally stable.

The shape of the roof was unique as it sat over a trapezoid shape. As the client wanted a mono pitch this meant we had to angle roof plate to allow for the difference in span lengths, this in turn results in compound mitred birds mouths that have to be carefully worked out and then cut to fit at the right spacings.

We then using polycarbonate clear roofing sheets and plastic trim to make the roof watertight and ready for all weather.

This was really fun bringing this to life and we would love to do more projects like this.
